At the moment, my work focuses on Design Systems and UX strategy. I enjoy the business aspects of design strategy as this aligns well with my MBA background.
For the past three years, I've had the privilege of contributing to design system projects for several esteemed companies, building on the foundation I established with my own business, Racestar Graffix.
There, our team was entrusted with Company Corporate Identities and Brand guides, translating them into designs for motocross decal kits. Though motocross design and digital UX might seem worlds apart, their core principles are similar. My experiences have honed my attention to detail, enabling me to meticulously identify inconsistencies in elements such as logos, colours, and alignments. In the motocross decal industry, a design oversight could lead to expensive printing mistakes, a lesson that translates seamlessly to UX; inconsistencies in icons, buttons, or colours can cause a digital product to feel unpolished and unprofessional. This underscores the immense value of design systems. They not only streamline the work of designers and developers but also serve as the north star for all team members. My passion for design and the experience of running my own business plays well into strategy for the implementation of design systems.
While the nature of the work is confidential, I have learnt valuable skills:
• Component-Based Design: An understanding of how to break down UI into reusable components with responsiveness top of mind.
• Cross-Platform Consistency: Ensuring that design principles and components are consistent across various platforms and devices.
• System Documentation: Creating and maintaining clear documentation for design patterns, components, and usage guidelines.
• Prototyping & Testing: Rapidly prototyping design solutions and conducting usability tests to refine the components.
• Accessibility: Ensuring the design system meets accessibility standards and guidelines, making products usable for everyone, including people with disabilities.
• Collaboration: Working closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure the design system is effectively implemented and maintained.
• Visual Design Mastery: A deeper understanding of colour, typography, spacing, and other fundamental visual design principles.
• User Research: Incorporating user feedback and data to refine and expand the design system.
• Tool Proficiency: Mastery of design tools like Figma, Sketch, and others that may be used in the creation and maintenance of design systems.
• Design Advocacy: Promoting the importance and benefits of the design system within an organization.
• Change Management: As design systems evolve, introducing and managing changes without disrupting ongoing projects becomes crucial.
• Design System Governance: Establishing guidelines and processes to ensure the integrity and consistency of the design system as it grows.
• Scalability: Understanding how to scale a design system to accommodate the growth of a product or suite of products.
• Problem-Solving: Facing unique challenges and finding solutions that can be standardised across the system.
• Stakeholder Communication: Effectively communicating the value and updates of the design system to stakeholders, ensuring buy-in, and collecting feedback.
• Continuous Learning: The design field is always evolving. Keeping up with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies is vital.
